    Aesopian says:

This is what I recommend bringing to your first BJJ class:

A towel and a bottle of water.

If you already own a martial arts uniform, you can usually wear that. You could wear your belt from another martial art, but I don’t recommend it. Just wear a white belt unless you want to stand out.

Most schools have loaner gis for people to borrow on their first day. You can contact the school to find out before you go.

If you are 100% confident you will stick with BJJ, you can buy a gi and wear that to your first class. You may want to wait and check if the school sells their own gis though. Some associations and schools require that you wear their official uniform when you train.

If you don’t have a uniform, you should wear something like this:

    • a close-fitting shirt or a rashguard such as Under Armor
    • a sports bra for women
    • athletic shorts that with a strong drawstring (not just an elastic waistband) with no pockets or belt loops or workout pants that aren’t stretchy or too loose
    • spandex compression shorts under your shorts/pants
    • an athletic protective cup and mouthguard if you want

You want an outfit that lets you move freely without being pulled off or torn. This is a very high contact activity.

If you have long hair, put it up in elastic bands or braid it to keep it out of the way. Dreadlocks need to be wrapped up too.

I recommend wearing flip flops or sandals to the gym, since it feels gross to put on socks and shoes when you’re sweaty afterward.

That should get you through your first class!
