Is it good practice for a beginner to be at open mats?
Just curious here if anyone would advise a beginner (like me) to participate in open mat time at the gym? Would it help my game or just be frustrating to the higher ranks?
From my personal experience, I have found open mat one of the most valuable resources. I started going to open mat from my very 1st days training. It’s like having a private lesson if you have other great students at your club (I’m very lucky as I was made very welcome when I joined).
I ask the same question to my fellow practitioners (I fel like I slow them down or am using their time up), they say having new inexperienced people is very useful for them, as we can move in unexpected ways or do unexpected things. This keeps their game sharp. Also, they like to try new things out, before trying on more advanced people or people they know well! It can be harsh (especially against the purple belts!), but isn’t that part of the fun, and also the best way to learn?
It’s a win win for you and them. I was a complete beginner with zero BJJ or martial arts experience. I’m now 6 months into my journey. It’s hard work but very rewarding when things start to come together. I am respected by my peers and likewise I respect everyone through all of the ranks.
Good luck!
