Yes, you can do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu even if you’re out of shape.
It will help you lose weight if that’s what you need, and help you put on muscle if that’s what you need. BJJ classes are usually structured to have warm-ups with running and body weight exercises (push ups, sit ups, etc.) Sparring can also be a very good workout. If that doesn’t convince you, read my reply to “Should I get in shape before starting BJJ?“
Yes. A large portion of people, if not most of them, start jiu-jitsu as out of shape adults. Even if you lift weights or run regularly, jiu-jitsu is a special kind of workout. Even if you are in shape, you are probably not in jiu-jitsu shape.
That might sound terrible, but it is actually kind of cool. Jiu-jitsu is an equalizer, and almost everyone starts at level one. If you are worried about being out of shape or getting winded at your first class, know that no matter what you do to prevent it, you will probably have to stop for a minute and suck wind. No one will fault you for it because they too started where you are starting. Get a gi. Tie your belt. And just start training. In a few weeks, you will be keeping up just fine.
