I have had two surgeries and have had a dozen other less severe injuries that put me on an unplanned training hiatus. I love jiu-jitsu and have made it a very central part of my life. If I try to watch an instructional while I am injured, it depresses me. I get frustrated with my injury, and I start to convince myself that I could back to the gym a bit earlier than the doctor recommended. That is the start to a new and possibly worse disaster, and it should be avoided.
My recommendation: schedule a return session with one of your trusted training partners a few days after your doctor’s greenlight to train. Tell that trusted friend to hold you to your commitment to train that day, no matter how slow and careful you have to be. Until then, pick another hobby and enjoy that. Catch up on Game of Thrones. Play some video games. Draw. Paint. Read a book. Pass the time and let your body heal. The mat will be there for you when you are ready.
