10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu is a branch on the jiu-jitsu tree. Technically speaking, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Admittedly though, 10th Planet—led by its founder, Eddie Bravo—has worked deliberately to differentiate itself from more mainstream jiu-jitsu.
For starters, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu advocates no-gi training exclusively. They argue that the next evolution of jiu-jitsu requires abandoning the gi to make jiu-jitsu more effective in mixed martial arts competition, where the gi is no longer legal to wear. In making jiu-jitsu more applicable in no-gi, 10th Planet jiu-jiteiros advocate positions like the rubber guard for achieving increased control in the absence of the gi and the many grips that it provides.
Despite some of their strange sounding positions and controversial innovations, Bravo’s own jiu-jitsu foundation is rooted in Machado Jiu-Jitsu, itself a very respectable lineage. Even though 10th Planet might be known for positions like crack head control, a great deal of what they touch is fundamentally sound jiu-jitsu even if the practicality of their innovations continue to be debated.
