The basics of sport nutrition apply here. Being well-hydrated and giving your body a good supply of clean fuel can make your training sessions more productive. Water is good, and some simple fruits or basic carbohydrates are typically enough. In my experience, going to jiu-jitsu with a full stomach will usually end badly, especially if it’s a knee-on-belly class.
But that’s me. Your body is different, and another routine might work better. Eating a large order of General Tso’s will never be a good idea, but you might have to eat more or less of a certain type of food to feel energized and spritely throughout class or open mat. The longer you train, the more you will learn to listen to your own body. You will be able to feel when you are not properly hydrated or when you do not have enough energy in the tank.
If you can improve your diet, you can improve your physical performance, and therefore get more out of your training.
