What should I eat before going to a competition?

    A sports nutritionist is much better equipped to answer this question, and even then, the question can be more complex depending on the tournament format. Are you weighing-in the day before? How about the morning of? Or are you competing in a rule set where you have to weigh-in right before you step on the mat?

    In general terms, you should at least be hydrated when you compete, and you should continue to hydrate as the bracket progresses. Water is obviously a safe bet, but having a sports drink with electrolytes handy is not a bad idea either. If the day is running long, having some snacks nearby to continue fueling your body without weighing you down too much is also advisable. Apples, bananas, and granola bars seem to be the norm.

    As you explore this topic more deeply, do not forget to learn what works best for you. For example, I personally cannot eat or drink anything but water a few hours before a training session. Otherwise, I feel nauseous to the point that I can barely train. On the same token, I know people that can eat almost anything before they train or compete and do just fine.

    Learn about yourself and figure out what your body needs to perform at its best.
