    Aesopian says:

Carlos Gracie Sr. devised a diet that he and his brother’s families have followed for 80 years. The diet’s main principles are to strictly follow a schedule for how often you eat, and rules for how different foods are combined to maintain the body’s pH balance. Rorion Gracie has written a book about the diet and sells related products like fruit juicers.

The Gracie diet is fairly healthy, encouraging mindful eating of healthy foods, but many of the rules about not combining certain foods are questionable. Dietary science doesn’t back up most of the claims of any pH balance diet. Diet doesn’t have the ability to affect the pH balance of most of your body except for urine. Even measuring the pH of urine is not an accurate reflection of the other processes in the body. For more on this, read Your Urine is Not a Window to Your Body: pH Balancing – A Failed Hypothesis and Acid/Alkaline Theory of Disease Is Nonsense.

What benefits the Gracie Diet does have are similar to those of the paleo diet and even junk “blood type” diets. They all have you eat healthy foods, especially fruits and vegetables, avoid junk foods, and be mindful of what and when you’re eating. Scientific research doesn’t back up all of their claims, but you could do worse.
