How do I get ready for my first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament?

    For your first tournament, go to as many classes as you can. That’s the best advice for your first outing. You could also clean up your diet and work on your cardio, but it’s probably best if you avoid overwhelming yourself.

    Instead, talk to your instructor and some other upper belts about their first tournament experiences and spend as much time as you can on the mat. Practicing escapes is a good idea, and if you have little to no takedown experience, working on your guard pulls is also advisable. You might be tempted to suddenly become a judoka six weeks before your first competition, but that is a waste of your precious preparation time.

    As much as the advice to “just train” sounds like a cheesy answer, it is really the best one. Your first competition is a chance to learn about what you need to effectively perform. Some people need music. Some people need to talk and laugh. Some people need to take a sip of water right before they step on the mat to avoid cotton mouth. You will figure out what you need by getting out there and giving it a shot.
