In terms of instructional books, Jiu-Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro and Kevin Howell has become something of a jiu-jitsu bible. Most instructionals assume prior knowledge and instead look to teach more advanced positions and techniques, but Jiu-Jitsu University covers the basics of posture and survival and defense, all vital material for a new student.
Beyond instructionals, you might also enjoy some more narrative driven books about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts. A Fighter’s Heart by Sam Sheridan is a more general fight book about one man’s love for all things combat. American Shaolin by Matthew Polly is a fun romp through the oddities of kung fu training in China. Angry White Pyjamas by Robert Twigger is a similar tale about training aikido in Japan.
Oh, you can also download Don’t Wear Your Gi to the Bar for free, but I wrote that, so full-disclosure about some shameful self-promotion. It’s free though. Hard to beat that.
